In the intro of the book the author states that a team member who is humble, hungry, and smart has the skills to be a great team player. This is what I feel what that means. Humble Individuals who are understanding and easy to talk to. Individuals who are Hungry in a way that does not involve food, but hungry to go above and beyond to improve upon their skills and knowledge to be successful. Being smart isn't something that you learn form books alone, but how well you can think on your feet when something is thrown at you unexpectedly. I truly believe that all of these qualities will make a team member indispensable.
When I read the introduction, I also found a lot of information and light on the subject of teamwork- which in my opinion, teamwork is indispensable in a person. The qualities that I consider to be indispensable within teamwork are: vulnerability, trust, healthy conflict, being proactive, having accountability for yourself and with your team, and focusing on the goals you and your team have made a plan for.
The qualities that are important to me in regards an ideal team player are communication skills, reliability, and drive towards a common goal. Communication, both verbal and written, are key in order to relay ones thought process in a clear manner to the rest of the team. Growing up in the early 2000s and being subject to the No Child Left Behinds school policy, has made me proficient in written communication. However, I feel I, as well as my peers, often suffer when it comes to verbal communication. It simply wasn’t emphasized as much in school. I’m wondering if anyone else feels this way?
I think the qualities discussed in the book are important in recognizing and developing an indispensable team player. I think getting along with others in a variety of situations, including successes and challenges, and being able to be humble, able to admit and learn from mistakes, as well as being proud of accomplishments as a team are important. The ability to share responsibility, step in and take over tasks as needed, and holding each other accountable are needed to create a successful team culture, and being able to continue to build and grow the culture.
